Westport’s Joan Mulloy and Vendee Globe veteran Enda O’Coineen talk about their adventures and plans
Posted in Connect on December 15, 2017.
This will be a fascinating insight into the world of solo offshore racing, with two excellent speakers.
Joan Mulloy is planning to be the first Irish woman to participate in the Solitaire du Figaro regatta, a gruellingly competitive 1600 nautical mile, four-stage race. She will be competing against some of the world’s best solo offshore sailors.
Enda O’Coineen was the first Irish participant in the Vendee Globe single-handed round the world race. Having dismasted 180nm off New Zealand on New Year’s Day 2017, he will shortly be heading back to finish what he started.
Enda’s talk will be about his Vendee globe adventures and his plans to return to Europe. Joan’s will be about her experiences and plans for the future.
Joan started sailing with the Mayo Sailing Club Junior programme when she was 8. Since then she progressed from dinghies to larger yachts. She took up team racing and match racing at NUI Galway and was part of a crew of students and graduates of NUI Galway who chartered the yacht Lynx for the 2012 Round Ireland Race, with her love for offshore racing growing stronger. She competed in the 2013 Fastnet Race, and then in 2014 she was back on the Round Ireland start line, this time in David Ryan’s charter Volvo 70, Monster Project. In the meanwhile, she has become a solo sailor already clocking up over 3,000 nautical miles.
Joan is one of sailing’s and Mayo’s bright rising stars. Mayo Sailing Club has recognised her achievements to date by presenting her with an honorary membership. Incredibly worthy of support, her drive and enthusiasm provide an unmissable opportunity for corporate sponsorship and the national and international exposure this would bring.
