Westport United development Phase One set for completion in the summer

Construction work on the Westport United development clubhouse has just started while the work on the pitches is near completion. The development committee and the Westport United Community Soccer Club Limited, expect phase one of the facility to be open in approximately six months, in time for the summer.
The opening of will be a landmark moment in the history of Connaught’s oldest club. Westport United purchased the site three years ago and excluding the site cost the development committee have spent €400,000 to date on the project.
Construction of the clubhouse is to be completed by local contractors Peter and Harold Conway. The clubhouse is being built to meet the needs of the various teams within the club and also with a view to keeping future maintenance costs to a minimum, while also ensuring ongoing running costs are as low as possible. For example, the external walls, doors and windows should require no future maintenance and the development is targeting a BER ‘A Rating’.
The building will have a large clubroom/multipurpose room which it is hoped will provide an income stream on an ongoing basis. Also included is a high specification finish in this room to facilitate multiple uses, which will keep options open in terms of renting this room out in the future.
In addition to the Large multipurpose room, the clubhouse will also contain a kit and laundry room, public toilets, disabled toilets, plant room, a Patrons board showing everyone who supported the project, two adult changing rooms and showering area, two juvenile changing rooms and showering area, referees room and showering area and a storage room for equipment.
With the grant of €200,000 from the FAI secured towards the cost of the building, the balance of the money will have to be raised by way of loan to meet the overall cost of construction. In cooperation with AIB the development committee have to borrow the balance, but if they can maintain the same level of community support as experienced to date, they believe the biggest part of this loan can be paid off in within three years.
To that end all associated with this project are hugely grateful for the continuing support of all who contribute towards this very worthwhile and essential development for Westport United FC, and the town and wider community.
