A date for your diaries, as 2nd September confirmed for All Ireland football final

The GAA have confirmed a new date for All-Ireland football final to accommodate possible visit of Pope Francis for World Meeting of Families mass, and will take place on Sunday September 2nd.

The All-Ireland football final traditionally always takes place on the third Sunday in September – but GAA Congress voted in February this year to move both the All-Ireland hurling and football finals to the month of August starting in 2018.

The GAA director of games administration and player welfare Feargal McGill confirmed that in preparation for the possibility of Pope Francis attending the World Meeting of Families mass on Sunday August 26th – which was the new date set aside for the football final – it has been decided to push back the game back a week.

It is too early to know if Pope Francis will attend WMOF2018 in Ireland, but he has said he would like to be present for the event.

The date that that has been agreed for the All-Ireland hurling final is August 19th and it will be unchanged. The draw for the 2018 GAA All-Ireland senior football championship takes place next week.
