Ireland’s oldest citizen, Molly Madden has passed away aged 109. Molly, who was born in Co Galway in December 1906 had moved with her family to North Mayo at an early age.
Madden died peacefully at the Moy Ridge Nursing Home in Ballina, where she lived for about nine years. She was predeceased in 2009 by her husband, Pat and lived most of her life at Ballycastle, Ballina.
Her family recalls that she never smoked or drank alcohol and was a firm believer in eating plenty of fresh fish, of which there was always a good supply in her coastal community, and home cooked foods.
One of her grandsons, John Madden, who played in goal for Mayo in the 1996 All-Ireland final has spoken to the media and said that her descendants were proud of her longevity.
