Posted in Connect on September 25, 2017.

Mayo County Council today welcomed the revamped Grid West Project which was unveiled at a Press Conference in Castlebar this morning, Friday 22nd September 2017.

EirGrid Director of Communications, Ms. Rosemary Stein unveiled a proposal which will see the needs of the region met by the construction of a new 110kv solution rather than the 220/440kv installation originally proposed. The 110kv infrastructure will be carried on traditional timber pole sets and will obviate the need for significant metal pylons.

Welcoming the development, Mr. Peter Hynes, Chief Executive said “This is a very welcome step forward which will expedite the delivery of a much needed upgrade to the electrical infrastructure in the County.  It will cater for the vast bulk of our renewable energy generation needs and will provide significant capacity for industrial development in the short and medium term”.

Councillor Richard Finn, Cathaoirleach of the Council said “It is good to see that community concerns had been taken on board and look forward to the new proposal moving through the design and construction stages for the benefit of all of the people of Mayo”.

EirGrid briefed Mayo County Council management following the Press Conference and are expected to provide a full presentation to a meeting of Mayo County Council in the coming weeks.
