Funding of €598,349 has been announced by Minister of State Michael Ring, last week for Ireland West Airport Knock.
The money has been allocated under the Public Policy Remit Core Airport Management Operational and Expenditure Subvention for 2015. It provides support to cover the significant costs associated with safety and security related projects and activities.
Speaking about the funding Minister Ring said “This funding has been provided by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. I have no doubt that this funding will be welcomed by Ireland West Airport Knock board. The past year has been a very successful year for Ireland West Airport Knock and I have every confidence that the airport will continue to progress into the future.”
TD Michelle Mulhern welcomed the funding but also added “This is essential funding to assist Knock Airport balance their books and cover operational losses for the year. However, it is my belief that Ireland West Airport Knock shouldn’t have to be competing with other regional airports for funding from the same pot”
Managing Director of Ireland West Airport Knock, Joe Gilmore welcomed the announcement, and says the airport now has an impressive international route network with major international airlines serving over 22 destinations and they expect passenger numbers to grow to over 700,000 in 2016.
