In 1879 fifteen people witnessed an apparition of St. John the Evangelist, St. Joseph and the Virgin Mary against the gable wall of the parish Church at Knock.
Since that time, Knock Shrine has developed into a major pilgrimmage destination which attracted Pope John Paul II in 1979 to commemorate the centenary of the apparition.
Visit the official website of Knock Shrine (external link) for complete information on the pilgrimmage and the services offered at the Shrine. Knock Shrine hosts an annual Novena which takes place in August (see their website for details).
There is also the Knock Folk Museum (external link), a great museum focused on the apparition and the life of the community at the time.
While the pilgrimmage to Knock is a destination in itslef, the village of Knock has a number of hotels, shops and restaurants making it a great base from which to tour East Mayo.
Mayo's nearby airport, Ireland West - Knock, was named in honour of Knock.
