Kiltimagh

Kiltimagh is an attractive town in the heart of the county with a population of approximately 1000 people. It is approximately 20 minutes away from Knock airport and approximately 30 minutes away from Castlebar, the administrative capital of Mayo.

Kiltimagh boasts many wonderful attractions such as it’s beautiful 19th century artisan village theme, the Town Museum, Station Master’s Exhibition Centre and Sculpture Park, which are all located in the Old Railway Station.

The town’s name (Kiltimagh) comes from the Irish Coillte Maghach which means the Woods of Maghach. Maghach was an ancient chieftain  of the Fir Bolg (early Celtic people from the Bronze era). Maghach after being defeated by the Tuatha e Danaan (Iron Age Celts) at the battle of Moytura (which was southwest of the now Kiltimagh) fled to the Wooded Sliabh Cairn Mountain, i.e. Coillte Maghach. After his death Maghach was buried on the mountain and the region became known as Coillte Maghach (Kiltimagh).
