The village of Cong is probably most famous from its role as the setting for the John Wayne film, The Quiet Man. This detail alone attracts thousands annually to view the various film locations from the movie which was filmed in the town and surrounding area.
Cong is one of the most picturesque villages in Mayo, if not Ireland itself. The village is surrounded about 1/2 way by water which gives it almost an island feel and adds to the already amazing beauty of the area.
Cong has walking trails, caves and Galway's massive lake, Lough Corrib, within walking distance. The town also has The Quiet Man Cottage Museum (external link), gorgeous medieval ruins and several great shops and restaurants including severak of Quiet Man fame.
It's also the nearest neighbor to the famous Ashford Castle Hotel (external link) which is a destination in itself. Non-residents can enjoy the scenery of Ashford Castle and take the boat tour of Lough Corrib which departs from just outside the castle's drawbridge.
