    History

The story of Knock as a place of pilgrimage began on 21 August 1879 when fifteen people from the village of Knock witnessed an Apparition of Our Lady, St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist at the south gable of Knock Parish Church. The witnesses ranged in age from five to seventy-four, fifteen ordinary people who witnessed an extraordinary event. The first recorded cure was reported ten days after the Apparition and from this point onwards, people began to come to Knock in ever-increasing numbers in search of healing. Monsignor James Horan was responsible in his time as parish priest at Knock for significantly upgrading the facilities and amenities of the area for visiting pilgrims. In 1976 he oversaw the completion of the Knock Basilica and was instrumental in getting what is now known as Ireland West Airport off the ground against incredible odds. In 1979 the Papal visit of Pope John Paul II was the highlight of a year of centenary celebrations at the Knock shrine.
