Castlebar In Brief


Castlebar is a bustling shopping town located roughly in the middle of Mayo.  It is host to a major performing arts venue, a national museum and a number of annual festivals.  Its location, great transport links and amenities make it a great base from which to tour the county--nothing is more than a short drive away. 

Castlebar has a number of major annual events including the Castlebar Blues Festival (June), Castlebar International Four Days Walks (June/July), Roola Boola (October) as well as a number of music, arts and other events.

  • The Royal Theatre is one of Ireland's biggest venues and hosts a myriad of local and international performances ranging from music and theatre to comedy. 
  • The Linenhall Arts Centre hosts theatre, music and arts programmes of all kinds.
  • The National Museum of Country Life is just a few minutes drive in the village of Turlough.
  • There are also four walking trails departing from the town in addition to a health walk along the ring road and a walk around Lough Lannagh (lake).
Castlebar is also home to shopping, restaurants, spas, Mayo Movieworld (cinema), bowling, Mitchell's GAA Park, Celtic Park (soccer).

History

Castlebar's medieval origins are given away by the town's name (a reference to one of De Burgo's Castles).  The town has had a number of significant historical events including the Castlebar Races (during the French invasion of 1798) and a role in the Land War.

Getting to Castlebar

  • By Rail:  Castlebar is on the main Dublin-Westport route.  For timetables and more information, visit Irish Rail.
  • By Car:
    • from Dublin, follow the N5 for Westport.  It takes just over 3 hours to drive from Dublin to Castlebar.
    • from Galway, follow the N17 for Castlebar.  It takes just over an hour to drive from Galway City to Castlebar.
    • from Sligo, follow the N17 and then the N5 for Castlebar.  It takes about an hour to drive from Sligo town to Castlebar.
  • By Bus:  Castlebar is served by a number of Bus Eireann routes.  For timetables and more information, visit Bus Eireann.
  • By Air:  You can fly to Knock Airport (IWAK) from a number of UK and European locations.  Visit the Ireland West Airport Knock website for schedules and carriers.
