Community Council News
The first Islandeady Community Get-together took place on Wed Sept 18th in the Community Centre. After many months of planning and preparation, it was wonderful to see 35 local people coming together for some activities and a freshly cooked dinner. Thanks to the volunteers that were at hand to help setting up the community centre, preparing, and serving the food, cleaning and providing the music and entertainment.
This idea originates from 2006/7 through the Community Futures 'community survey' when a significant number of people wanted a facility/service in Islandeady to meet up with friends and participate in some leisurely activities. In Jan 2013, the Community Council had a GMIT student working with them to explore this notion further, and in May 2013, Mary McDonnell produced her report and recommendations. The Community Council acted on her recommendations and significant changes were made to the Community Centre.
3 Main elements came out of the Report; (1) People wanted a place to meet up with their friends and neighbours and meet new people (2) people wanted to participate in activities as they were approaching retirement/had nothing to keep them occupied and (3) people wanted something like the Annual Community Christmas Party, but on a regular basis. Bearing all this in mind, a core group approached many service providers such as the H.S.E. for advice and assistance and we received additional help from the R.S.S. and Tus, schemes which have been instrumental in getting this programme started.
The Community Council has being active in supporting this initiative and promoting it throughout the Community. Fr. Pat has also played a major role in promoting this service within the Parish and we are extremely grateful.
The 'Weekly Get-together' will take place EVERY Wednesday in the Community Centre at a cost of just €5 per person for this service.
A Wheelchair accessible Bus is available to pick up any person who may need transport to bring them to the Community Centre. This is open to anybody who is interested in meeting up once a week with friends and neighbours in a relaxed environment and plenty of food and entertainment/activities are available. If you wish to put your name down, or require transport, you can contact the Centre Mon-Wed on 094 90 44797 or
Philomena on 087 9626075

And Our Work is Done
May God support us,
All the day long.
‘Til the shadows lengthen,
And the evening comes.
And the busy world is hushed,
And the fever of life is over,
And our work is done.
Then, in His mercy, May He grant us,
A safe lodging,
A Holy rest,
And peace at last.
They Live On
Those we hold most dear never truly leave us.
They live on in the kindness they showed,
And on the love they brought into our lives.
