Turlough’s Community’s Fair Day
Heavy early morning’s rain failed to dampen the Turlough community spirit when all members of the community turned out to make this Fair Day a special occasion in Turlough Village, under the programme of organisers Dennis Igoe, Kenny O Brien, Charlie Shaw and Pat Keavney, in preparation for the great number of visitors who came to Turlough to enjoy the Fair Day.
The road team had an early start to mark off the village street for the stall-holders, the visiting vintage cars and tractors and to the place the barriers to mark the road closed village street area, the barriers was manned all day by volunteer members of Turlough Community.
The stall exhibitors displayed a great selection of crafts and produce, all of well established quality products like those from the Terrybawn Pottery, Carrowkeel Furniture, Mayo Go Carts and Turlough Nurseries that set the standards for the day.
I liked the Atlantic Gates from Cooneys, Ballyneggin, Raised Planting Beds from Brendan Coffey and the water harvesting precast units from Willie Freeney.
Ann Green, Killard had her spinning wheel, turning our wool thread direct from the fleece and showing her fine range of hand knit products from the Arran sweater to her colourful range of fine knitwear, but it was my purchase of her freshly dug, Orla new potatoes, that I enjoyed on my dinner plate all last week.
Rose Geraghty had the Country Markets stall there with a wide range of home produced products and Pat Comway had a fine collection of coin sets.
Rural crafts and skills were well catered for, and displayed on the day, Kieran Howley showed the skill of sheep shearing, Seamus and Tommie Mc Ellin had the thrasher working on the village street and Charlie Shaw had horses from the Equestrian Centre shod by Farrier Pat Ruane.
The music stage in the village centre had live traditional and popular music playing all day long and the local groups Bernard Joyce and friends, Strayed and Na Ciotagi, played the music that had many dancing on the village street.
Brian Casey had a display of chickens, ducks and hens where a ‘bring and buy’ system was working that proved popular on the day.
Many units and groups from outside the Turlough area, came to help and participate in making the revived Fair Day in Turlough such a success.
Those wanting teas, cakes and sandwiches were well catered for on the lawn at Barretts home where Teresa and friends supplied food and took donations for the charity of the day, CROI. The young ladies on the home-baking stall were selling their home-baking with monies collected going for Ethiopia, so overall it was a day of fundraising for good causes with the check for CROI reaching €1,600.
The young members of Foroige Club organised and sold a great raffle, Kenny o’Brien had the Showhouse of the Woods Development on Turlough street open to all prospective new Turlough residence and auctioneer Michael Mulhern conducted a useful and entertaining Slave Auction.
Declan Mc Grath, of Mc Grath’s Waste, Turlough had supplied the requirements to ensure that Turlough Village Street was spick and span after a great Fair Day in Turlough.

The Art of History in Turlough Park
The National Museum of Country life has arranged with the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum for an art exhibition in Turlough Park of watercolours of Irish town life in the 1820’s, beautiful paintings by the noted Irish painter of potrait miniatures, Sampson Towgood Roche.
This touring exhibition from the Ulster Museum, dates from c. 1824 and relates to the everyday life in County Waterford and gives a fascinating insight in the pre-famine Ireland.
Roche is probably best remembered as a painter of miniatures and many of these survive in public collections in Ireland and England.
Although many of Roche’s commissions came from the aristocracy, the watercolours in the copy of his sketchbook in the exhibition and the paintings on show in Turlough demonstrate a genuine interest in the everyday lives of ordinary people.
Life in Waterford and Dungarvan in the 1820’s is featured in many of Roche’s watercolours, the commercial life and exports of Waterford and the fishing and seaside town activities of Dungarvan.
