Ballinrobe Author Mick Donnellan will launch his debut crime novel in Ballinrobe Library on February 25th at 7pm.
Author
El Niño is the debut crime novel from Ballinrobe writer – Mick Donnellan. Having had an immensely successsful year in the theatre for 2011, Donnellan’s artistic metirs are now also being recognised in the fiction world. His most popular Plays to date – Sunday Morning Coming Down, Shortcut to Halleljuah and Gun Metal Grey – have sold out across the country, inspiring excellent reviews and standing ovations from sell-out crowds.
The novel, set both in Ballinrobe and Galway city, was writtien shortly after Mick completed the M.A. in writing at NUIG in 2004. Since then, he’s been travelling and writing steadily. Having worked in between as a freelance travel writer, journalist, screenwriter and teacher, Mick is now delighted to add the name of novelist to the list.
History -
El Niño, written almost seven years ago, has nothing to do with weather phenomenons or footballs players. The title comes from the name of the female central character, El Niño, who was born on the night there was a storm, and her father said it was an indication of how she was to live her life. Having secured an agent in 2005, Mick was sure he’d be on the shelves by Autumn 2006. The boom was on and new fiction was in demand. Author’s like Ken Bruen and Declan Burke were flying off the shelves. The agent was very excited. Yet time passed and the market became less certain. The public’s attention turned to Non-fiction and chic-lit such as Ceceilia Ahern and the appetitie for West of Ireland crime fiction waned.
A year passed, then another. The book had done the rounds and the Celtic Tiger was beginning to run out of steam. By 2008 the agent admitted defeat, and relinquished it’s representation back to Mick. He then went on the publishing route himself, gathering interest from publishers in Canada and Austrailia but never securing a deal. Just at the end of 2011, Mick was lucky enough to discover Dublin based company – Original Writing. After some negotiations, it became obvious that they had the perfect platform in which to finally publish the book.
