Our news section is full of the latest news from the county and abroad but we thought it only right to celebrate some of the most incredible achievements and highlights from that section in here as well.

These achievements for Mayo and Mayo people have included:

  • The amazing story of a young Mayo student building a nuclear fusion reaction in his back garden and see some of the reaction to his plans here and here
  • Maria Walsh brought great honour to Mayo and to her home village of Shrule by becoming the 2014 Rose of Tralee, building on the win of Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin in 2005
  • St Brendan’s National School, Kilmeena win a national award in the sustainable community initiative – Get Involved in Your Community - for a water conservation project featuring in National Geographic
  • Nóirín Ní Laighin from Bekan, Claremorris received a highly prestigious Fulbright Award
  • The Mayo News selected as the best local newspaper in Europe
  • Thirty members of the Hughes family from Westport complete the Dublin City Marathon, raising €46,000 for the personal development programme, On The Road Again
