Mayo: Keeping in touch with home from Dublin

Dublin crestMuintir Mhaigh Eo Atha Cliath (Mayo Association Dublin) was founded in 1905 – known then as The Mayo Men’s Association – by Major John MacBride from Westport and Mr Edward Lavelle from Belcarra among others. It is today one of the best supported and most active county associations both nationally and internationally.

Back in 1905, the primary objective of the Mayo Association Dublin was to help migrants from the county to establish their presence and identity in the capital. This social network was an invaluable, not to mention comforting, resource for the Mayo diaspora in the capital. The visits back to Mayo then were infrequent for many reasons – including logistics, affordability and time!

Objectives and Activities

Joining the Mayo Association Dublin is a great way to meet, network and socialise with Mayo people in the capital at our many well attended events throughout the year including the Summer Party, Business Lunch, Race night, Christmas Party, Awards Banquet and other cultural and social events.

The Association’s objective is to provide a platform in the capital for the Mayo diaspora to network professionally and socially while celebrating, promoting and supporting all things Mayo.

The greatest ongoing challenge our Association faces is to ensure we remain both significant and relevant, which our committee works very hard to achieve. We continuously market our activities and focus on increasing membership annually. Most importantly, we seek to introduce new members onto our committee, which in turn maintains a fresh feed of energy and ideas which respect and build upon the Mayo Association Dublin brand.
